A weekend driving road
“WHEN YOU COME TO A FORK IN THE ROAD, TAKE IT!”
Like corners? This drive delivers in spades.
Super sharp in spots – challenges your concentration, with a relaxing ferry ride near the half-way point. Screaming 2nd gear action, with the thunder of exhaust notes echoing off the cliff faces.
Start at: Galston Rd, Hornsby.
Via: Galston Gorge, Berowra Waters Ferry.
End at: Pacific Highway, Berowra.
Detailed route: 1. Proceed West from Galston Gorge Rd in Hornsby through Galston Gorge; 2. Right at Crosslands Rd; 3. Left at Bevans Rd; 4. Left at Knights Rd; 5. Right at Bayfield Rd; 6. Right at Blacks Rd which becomes Bay Rd.
Join the car ferry then later, drive East along Berowra Waters Road, back to the Pacific Highway.
The ferry is free and operates continuously except for the second Tuesday of each month between 12 noon and 2.30pm.
Road surface: Very good, Bay Rd is newly sealed, narrow in places.
Features: Tight and twisty! Excellent scenery. Try to get on the front row of the grid on the car ferry for a snappy take-off when the ferry master drops the chequered flag….
As always, weekdays are less travelled, with only the rare Abominable Slowman, but weekends still give a great drive.
Coffee stop:
Pasta Deli, Wahroonga – Campos coffee, pastries.
-or –
SteamYard Cafe, Galston.
Timing ~30 mins to the car ferry. Average 15 mins total for the ferry then 15 minutes back to the Highway plus your travel time to the start & back home.
Beware of other drivers on the narrow winding roads who may consider double white lane markings to be purely advisory!
Drive well, stay safe.
